Inspirational People…Thomas O’Brian, Aero Studios NYC

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Thomas O’Brian – Interior and Home Furnishings designer

Founder and President of Aero Studios, New York City.

There is something unexpected and charming about the way Thomas O’Brian lives. Whilst it’s certain that his New York living space is dominantly framed by rather elegantly scaled windows, there is an intriguing style to this tailored interior that is truly his own. Like a handsome pencil sketch or moody classical charcoal drawing, this apartment is a perfect example of a restrained palette and carefully edited selection of subtle tones.

We admire the curated, linear effect and layered artful walls. There is something almost sculptural about his choice of shapes. This is subtlety in spoonfuls. Camel, ecru, greige, milky white and ebony. Chic.

5 Minutes with…Tamara Maynes

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Tamara Maynes – Professional peddler of modern craft and regular contributor to Inside Out magazine

How did you end up in the world of design & interiors?
I started working in design about 20 years ago when I had a small women’s wear label. I attribute my switch from fashion to interiors to a small collection of friends who already worked in interiors and enticed me over to the other side! I thank them quietly and consistently as I continue to love what I do.
Can you name some places you love to travel or visit?
I don’t travel any where near as much as I would like to but whenever I can get to Melbourne I am never disappointed… such an inspirational city.
Any interior books on your shelves that are favourite?
‘The Selby Is In Your Place’ is always an inspiring re-read and Wary Meyers ‘Tossed & Found’ is another corker.
At home, what do you most like to do?
Spread out on my sunny porch with a pot of chai, pile of magazines and regular visits of affection from Eric the cat.
Any home accessories that you are obsessed with right now?
Yes, displaying nature finds! Every morning I return from my neighbourhood walk with something fallen and unusual that finds a new home on my shelves and table tops. Dried skeletal papery foliage like ‘Honesty’ are a favourite.
What would you like to change in your home?
Ownership! I plot and plan all day everyday about what I would change about my home if I weren’t  just renting. Love the light filled open plan layout and attic style bedrooms but oh to change white walls to dark, strip floors back, and update hardware throughout!
If you could only take one thing with you from home what would it be?
My magazine collection. Dates back to the 80’s, is 500 strong and lives in a prime position stacked up against the wall right beside the front door… ready to go at any time!
Where would your dream home be?
There are some energetic and exciting places I often imagine living in like Berlin or Brooklyn, though Melbourne is probably the one I consider most realistically . My dream home could be city or country as long as it was old and charming, semi-industrial in style, open plan, light filled and had some semblance of a private outdoor sanctuary where I can garden. I am really inspired by warehouse style homes that have incredibly wow interiors hiding behind completely unassuming exterior facades.

Friday, October 12, 2012

The amazingly talented Kit Kemp – designer and co-owner of the boutique Firmdale Hotels has just launched her new book A Living Space (Hardy Grant, $59.95).

The book is a joy visually and is full of wonderful tips and ideas.

We love that she has included EDIT’s ‘Harlequin’ design to help create her sophisticated yet quirky interiors.

Kit is a fan of EDIT fabrics and will soon be adding ‘Glossy Leaves’, ‘Trees’ and ‘Garlands’ to her

current and new hotels.
